Certifications and CPE
Record professional certifications and continuing professional education (CPE), see progress in each CPE period, and look back at previous periods.
What the page is for
Certifications and CPE is a page in the Lavawall® console, in the Training area. Lavawall is the RMM, security, and compliance platform from ThreeShield, built and hosted in Canada.
Staff record their professional certifications (for example CISSP, CISA or Security+), when each one expires, and the CPE each one needs. They add outside training such as conferences, webinars and courses, with the hours and proof. Completed Lavawall courses count automatically. Each certification shows progress in its current CPE period, and every earlier period stays available to look back on.
What you see
- My record, Team and Approvals tabs. Team and Approvals appear only for people with a training role.
- Certification cards: the certifying body, Expires, the Current CPE period and its Period length, progress bars for This period and, when the certification has an annual minimum, This year of the period, and badges such as Behind on CPE or Expired.
- Previous CPE periods: one table per certification, newest first, with Period, Credits required, Credits earned (and each year against the annual minimum), Hours, Items counted (open it to see each activity and course), Waiting for approval and Result (Met, Not met or No requirement recorded). Every column sorts, and each table has a filter.
- CPE activities and Lavawall courses: everything recorded, with dates, hours and status.
- Download CSV: the record as a spreadsheet, with the current period of each certification and a row for every previous period.
How CPE periods roll over
- A certification's CPE period comes from CPE cycle starts and CPE cycle ends. Without them, the Expires on date is used as the end of the cycle.
- When a period ends, the next one starts the following day with the same length. Nobody has to change anything, and reminders follow the new period.
- If only one date is entered, the period length is the certifying body's usual cycle (for example three years for ISC2, ISACA and CompTIA, two for IAPP). Enter both dates to set it exactly.
- An activity counts in the period that contains its date. Records are never moved or removed when a period ends.
- Credits do not carry over from one period to the next.
- When the certifying body gives you new cycle dates, edit the certification. The current period and the previous periods follow the new dates.
How to add a certification
- On My record, click Add a certification.
- Optionally pick one in Start from a common certification (optional) to fill in the published CPE rules, and check them against the certifying body's current rules.
- Fill in the certifying body, the certification, Earned on, Expires on, CPE cycle starts, CPE cycle ends, Credits needed in the cycle and Credits needed each year.
- Changes save automatically. Click Done.
How to look back at a previous period
- Scroll to Previous CPE periods on My record. A manager opens Team and selects the person.
- Find the certification's table and the period. Open Items counted to see each activity and course that counted.
- Click Download CSV to keep a copy.
Tips
- Activities people add for themselves count once a training manager approves them on Approvals.
- The requirement shown for a previous period is the one recorded on the certification now. If the certifying body changed its rules, keep its letter or certificate as proof.
- Period dates are calendar days. A Lavawall course counts on the date it was completed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), so a course finished late in the evening on the last day of a period in North America can count in the next period.
Troubleshooting
- "No previous periods yet."
- The certification's first period has not ended, or it has no cycle dates or expiry date. Add the dates on the certification.
- My sign-in is not linked to a person.
- Ask an administrator to add you to your organization's directory with your sign-in email address.
- The period dates look wrong.
- Edit the certification and enter both CPE cycle starts and CPE cycle ends for one cycle.
