Nova Scotia Accessibility Act and Built Environment Standard S.N.S. 2017, c. 2; standard from 1 Apr 2026
The Accessibility Act (S.
N. S.
2017, c. 2) aims at an accessible Nova Scotia by 2030.
The Accessibility Directorate administers it. Public sector bodies prescribed in the Accessibility Act General Regulations (N.
S. Reg.
197/2019, amended to N. S.
Reg. 128/2024) must have an accessibility advisory committee and an accessibility plan, made publicly available and updated every three years (Directorate compliance page, read 24 October 2026).
The prescribed bodies and their effective dates in s. 3 of the General Regulations are: 1 April 2021 for the universities, regional and county municipalities, towns, regional public libraries and villages; 1 April 2022 for the Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Build Nova Scotia, education entities, Events East Group, health authorities, Invest Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation and the Nova Scotia Museum; and 1 April 2025 for the Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency.
The first accessibility standard is the Built Environment Accessibility Standard Regulations, which apply from 1 April 2026 to aspects of the built environment that are newly constructed, installed or redeveloped with work beginning on or after that date and to the organizations the regulations name; they require, among other things, publicly available plans by 1 April 2026 for accessible entrances, accessible parking maintenance and snow and ice control, a government plan for accessible outdoor spaces, and fire emergency evacuation plans for small apartment buildings. Standards for education, employment, goods and services, information and communication and public transportation are being developed and are not in force.
IMPORTANT LIMIT: the text of the Accessibility Act itself could not be read (nslegislature. ca refused automated access), so this framework cites the Act only through the Directorate's pages and the two regulations; check the Act's section numbers before relying on them.
