Governance, risk & compliance
Newfoundland and Labrador Accessibility Act SNL 2021 c A-1.001; in force 3 Dec 2021
The Accessibility Act (SNL 2021, c.
A-1. 001; assented 4 November 2021; in force 3 December 2021 except s.
2(1)(o)(v), s. 37) is enabling legislation for accessibility standards made by regulation on the advice of the Accessibility Standards Advisory Board.
Anyone subject to a standard must comply within the time the standard gives (s. 19) and keep records (s.
20). Part VI applies to public bodies (defined in s.
2(1)(o): departments, Crown-controlled corporations and agencies, courts, the House of Assembly (s. 2(1)(o)(v), not yet in force), the larger towns and cities, the provincial health authority, Memorial University, College of the North Atlantic, conseils scolaires, private educational institutions, and bodies designated by regulation).
A public body must, within two years of the Act coming into force and every three years after, prepare an accessibility plan with a report on measures taken and intended and procedures to assess the accessibility effect of proposed policies, programs, practices, services, enactments and by-laws; it must consult persons with disabilities or their representatives and make the plan publicly available (s. 22).
No accessibility standard regulation was found in force: the Disability Policy Office page shows standard development committees (customer service, and information and communication, with applications open to 15 June 2026). Compliance and enforcement provisions are in Part VII (ss.
23 and following) and were not read in detail. General information, not legal advice.

How Lavawall® helps you get to Newfoundland and Labrador Accessibility Act compliance
Most of Newfoundland and Labrador Accessibility Act comes down to technical controls you have to run and prove: keeping systems patched, hardening configuration, detecting breaches early, backing up what matters, controlling access, and keeping evidence that all of it actually happened. Lavawall® runs those controls across Windows, macOS, Linux, and Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace from one console, maps them to Newfoundland and Labrador Accessibility Act, and tracks your posture continuously instead of once a year at audit time.
- Assess your current state against Newfoundland and Labrador Accessibility Act in the Lavawall GRC module, with the questionnaire and control set built in.
- Remediate the gaps with the same platform — automated patching, configuration fixes, backups, and access review — not a separate project.
- Evidence everything with timestamped, exportable records auditors, insurers, and clients accept.
